Valley’s Tobias Figura and United’s Adam McClelland.

BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 9

United 4 (Adam McClelland 2, Ryan Schulte, Matt Freeman) defeated Valley 1 (Duncan Stewart) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.

United severely dented Valley’s finals aspirations, while strengthening its own playoff hopes, with a solid three-goal victory.  Not only did the win move United to seventh on the ladder, it also claimed the inaugural Jones-Ludwig Trophy, which honours the contributions to hockey by club stalwarts Eric Jones (Kedron-Wavell) and Norm Ludwig (Valley).  After Ryan Schulte helped United forge a 1-0 halftime lead, goalkeeper Glenn Dodd saved shots by Valley duo Matthew Denning and Luke Jennings to keep his side in front.  United striker Adam McClelland then started to terrorise the Valley defence, capitalising on a defensive error to beat keeper Lachlan Barker with a neat reverse stick shot.  The turning point of the match came when Valley fullback David Knox left the field with a head gash, with the resulting defensive reshuffle suiting McClelland and Matt Freeman, who both scored to set up a 4-0 lead with six minutes left to play.  Valley’s Lee Rendell and Greg Rendell carved out a piece of history for themselves, with a rare appearance by an uncle and nephew together in first grade.
