David Brain, captain Tom Brough, coach Blair Brown and goalkeeper David Reid celebrate
Commercial's first premiership hat-trick since 1978.

BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Grand final

Commercial 5 (Cale Cramer 2, David Brain, Jacob Burns, Chris Beale) defeated Easts 3 (Jacob Whetton, Jarrod Black, Tim Bates) at the State Hockey Centre.

Commercial has claimed its first hat-trick of top-grade premierships in 30 years after beating regular grand final sparring partner Easts in a high scoring season decider.  The Cobras continued Easts’ recent tale of woe in grand finals, denying the Tigers a premiership for the second straight season while claiming their third straight title.  Meeting in the season decider for the third time in four seasons, the Cobras and the Tigers were tied 2-2 at halftime, before Commercial gained the ascendancy in the second period.  David Brain opened the scoring for Commercial midway through the first half, but minor premiers Easts equalised through Jacob Whetton only one minute later.  Commercial regained the lead when Cale Cramer scored the first of his two goals, but Jarrod Black brought Easts back level with a goal five minutes before halftime.  Commercial appeared to have Easts’ measure after Jacob Burns scored soon after the break and the Cobras secured a two-goal lead through Chris Beale.  However, the match looked set for a grandstand finish when Easts’ Tim Bates sent an unstoppable penalty corner flick into the top of the net to see the score 4-3 with five minutes left.  But Cramer scored moments later to seal the Cobras’ 14th top-grade title and fourth premiership in five years.  Commercial, led by first-year coach Blair Brown and captain Tom Brough, also celebrated goalkeeper David Reid winning the Hec Cormie Medal for being the player of the final.  Despite regularly being the competition’s standout team, Easts has only two premierships to show from six grand final appearances over the past decade.
