BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 16

Pine Rivers St Andrews had led in four of the last five meetings with Commercial but ended up losing all those matches, and now the Saints finally have something to show for their efforts against the Cobras. Pine Rivers St Andrews scored first at Burringbar Park and ended the match with a vital 1-1 draw, keeping the Brendale-based side in fourth position on the ladder. Josh Hockey got the goal for the Saints, before Jacob Burns equalised for the Cobras six minutes before halftime. Pine Rivers St Andrews last took points of Commercial back in Round 12, 2009.

Competition ladder leaders Bulimba became the first team to secure a semi-final berth after overcoming Valley 3-1 at the State Hockey Centre. Two goals in the second quarter put the Bulls up 2-0, after Michael Bates scored in the 18th and 27th minutes. Bulimba young gun Michael Francis scored for the third straight match, slotting the vital third goal of the game for his side. Valley hit back when Alecz Day converted a penalty stroke, after striker James Kruger was felled by Bulimba goalkeeper Nick Edds, after Kruger received Day’s overhead pass near the circle.

Kedron-Wavell has recorded its best season since 1999 after winning its fourth game of the season. The Wolves edged past Redcliffe Leagues 2-1 at Mary Nairn Fields, to move to within one competition point of seventh-placed Valley. Kedron-Wavell opened the scoring three minutes before halftime, sending a tomahawk shot into the net just in from the backline, before Daniel Springfield doubled the Wolves’ lead six minutes after the main break.  Redcliffe Leagues missed some good scoring chances but James Hawley took his, converting a penalty corner shot.

Easts moved back into the top five after overcoming a stubborn Norths side at the State Hockey Centre. The defending champions beat the current wooden spooners 6-0, but Easts only led the winless Eagles 1-0 at halftime, via an 11th minute Kane Posselt goal. The Tigers doubled its lead 30 minutes through Dale Gohdes and went up 3-0 thanks to a Scott Boyde strike with one quarter of the game remaining. The score blew out late in the fixture, as Easts’ top goal scorer Robert Bell converted three penalty corner goal attempts in the final eight minutes of the clash.

Four goals in just six minutes helped Labrador overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat University of Queensland on the Gold Coast. The visiting University side scored first after five minutes at Keith Hunt Park when Joel Rintala knocked in his 50th goal in Division 1, then Aidan Rintala scored to put the Redmen up 2-0. Labrador’s attack clicked into gear in the third quarter, as Luke Tyne, Brad Hughes, Joe Reardon and Craig Bigham put goal past University goalkeeper Michael Webb, playing his second top-grade game, between the 45th and 51st minutes.
