BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 10
Valley took points off Easts for just the third time in ten years, with a late Aaron O’Beirne goal securing the Diehards a draw. Valley came from behind three times in a surprise 4-4 result against the defending champions at Burringbar Park. Pat Krusi opened the scoring for Valley before goals to Kurt Ford and Sam Carson had Easts up 2-1. The teams went goal for goal for the rest of the match, with scores from O’Beirne and James Kruger for Valley and Robert Bell and Hugh Pembroke for Easts making it 4-3, before O’Beirne scored the decisive equaliser with six minutes left.
Pine Rivers St Andrews came from two goals down to force a 2-2 draw with Bulimba at the State Hockey Centre. Bulimba’s Troy Elder opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, after collecting a rebound from the pads of Saints goalkeeper Andrew Butturini on the penalty spot. A Jacob Anderson turnover near the circle was punished when Cale Cramer capitalised to double the Bulls’ lead. Anderson made up his error, running half the length of the field before sinking a tomahawk shot, then he tied the scores with a penalty corner drag flick goal in the third quarter.
Adam McClelland doubled his goal tally for the season by scoring four times and Jarrod Carseldine also hit four goals as competition front-runners Commercial thrashed bottom-placed Norths. Commercial’s top goal scorer Jared Taylor and his captain Kye Hawgood both scored a hat-trick of goals as the Cobras humbled the Eagles 16-1 at Mary Nairn Fields. Commercial led 6-0 at quarter-time and extended to an 8-0 advantage by halftime. Jake Burns and Ian Schulz also scored for Commercial while Phil Dumpleton scored the lone goal for Norths, which remains winless this year.
The clash between one of the competition’s in-form teams and arguably the league’s most improved side was a mismatch, as Labrador outclassed Kedron-Wavell on the Gold Coast. In Kula Bhullar’s 250th first-grade game, his Kedron-Wavell side suffered its heaviest defeat this year, falling 8-0 to Labrador at Keith Hunt Park. Brad Hughes scored three penalty corner goals for Labrador, which led 5-0 at halftime. Regular goal scorers Joe Reardon, Corey Weyer and Jason Wilson also hit the target for the Tigerstix, which now shares top spot on the competition ladder with Commercial.
University of Queensland is keeping pace with the competition’s top three teams after winning a third match from four outings, this time accounting for Redcliffe Leagues on the peninsula team's home turf. Last year’s league top goal scorer, Joel Rintala, has again found his form in attack, scoring for the fourth straight game with a brace against Redcliffe Leagues at Mary Nairn Fields. The students overcame a resilient Redcliffe Leagues side in the latter stages of the match, knocking in three field goals in the final 20 minutes, to Rintala, Jake Hathway and Oliver Crane.
