BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 18

Fast-finishing Bulimba has won its first Minor Premiership since 2002, after beating Kedron-Wavell 7-1 at the State Hockey Centre. The Bulls led 3-1 at halftime and hit four more goals in eight minutes late in the contest. Bulimba young guns Matt Rutter and Michael Francis each scored two goals, before Cale Cramer, Jack Baldwin and Simon Borger rounded out the scoring. Winning the Minor Premiership is a good omen for Bulimba, with the Bulls going on to win the grand final the last three times that the club finished the regular season on top of the ladder.

Faced with the possibility of becoming the fifth reigning champions in 22 years – and the first since 1999 – to miss the finals the following season, Easts responded with a 4-3 win over Labrador. The victory secured the fifth and final playoffs spot for the Tigers. Visiting Australian Kookaburras striker Dylan Wotherspoon scored a hat-trick for Easts at Keith Hunt Park, which led 2-1 at halftime. Jacob Webber extended Easts’ lead one minute after the main break. Labrador’s Joe Reardon scored to make it 3-2, before Wotherspoon gave Easts breathing space.

University of Queensland will miss the semi-finals for the first time since 2012, despite beating Valley in its final round fixture. University led 2-0 through goals by Jake Hathway and Drew Wenzel, before Alecz Day hit back for Valley. Hathway scored again but Valley replied through Tobias Figura. A last-minute goal from Joel Rintala, beating rookie Valley goalkeeper Cade Banditt in a one-on-one contest, sealed University’s win. University and Easts finished on the same competition points, with the Tigers claiming fifth spot with a superior goal difference.

Adam McClelland scored four goals against his former side as Commercial edged past a gallant Redcliffe Leagues team 5-4. Ninth-placed Redcliffe Leagues led third-placed Cobras twice during the match, first when Jamie Want opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and again six minutes later when Tim Ward re-established the Redmen's lead at 2-1, after McClelland had scored. Three goals in three minutes from Commercial just before halftime hurt Redcliffe Leagues, to see Commercial lead 4-2 at the main break, before Redcliffe Leagues staged a late comeback.

Pine Rivers St Andrews will enter the semi-finals on the back of two straight clean sheets after holding Norths scoreless at Burringbar Park. Two goals from Luke Reddiex saw Saints, unbeaten in four previous games at Chermside, lead 2-0 soon after quarter time. Norths held the Saints at bay for 40 minutes before Zac Day hit the target. Craig Smith scored just three minutes later to secure a 4-0 win for Pine Rivers St Andrews and a winless season for Norths, despite the Eagles having the third best for and against of a wooden spoon side of the past ten years.
