BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 9 *

* Catch-up games for washed out June 4 fixtures

A late penalty stroke goal saw Labrador beat Easts in its Tuesday night catch-up game at the Clem Jones Sports Complex. Scoreless at halftime, the game’s first goal came from Labrador’s Corey Weyer midway through the third quarter, before Easts’ Jacob Webber equalised 12 minutes later. The match was headed for a draw before Labrador was awarded a penalty stroke with two minutes left, converted by Joe Reardon, after an Easts defender’s foot stopped a goal-bound shot. Labrador’s 2-1 win leaves three-time defending champions Easts outside the top five.

Cale Cramer has equalled his career best scoring effort for a season, reaching 25 goals after hitting half of Bulimba’s goals in a big win over Kedron-Wavell. The Queensland Blades striker scored four times at Burringbar Park, two times either side of halftime, in an 8-0 victory. The Bulls built on a 3-0 halftime lead with two goals in the seven minutes straight after the main break, to Troy Elder and Jared Gunner, his first top-grade goal in his sixth match for the Bulls. Playing his 200th game for Bulimba, Mitch Baker scored in the final minute of the match.

University of Queensland twice overcame a two-goal deficit to edge past Valley 5-4 at the State Hockey Centre. Valley led 2-0 but University’s Aidan Rintala scored a decisive goal from a penalty corner on the halftime buzzer. The Diehards re-established its two-goal advantage straight after halftime but University hit back a couple of minutes later, before the Redmen scored three unanswered goals to lead 5-3 with five minutes remaining in the match. University’s Joel Rintala finished with a hat-trick of goals, while Valley’s James Kruger bagged two.

Redcliffe Leagues belied its lowly position on the competition ladder, causing headaches for premiership fancies Commercial before succumbing 3-1 at the State Hockey Centre. Commercial striker Jake Burns opened the scoring after 11 minutes but Redcliffe Leagues, which has won fewer games than Commercial has lost this year, hit back with a goal to Trent Kreis in the 19th minute. Two goals in the third quarter, to former Redcliffe Leagues players Adam McClelland and Shane Kenny, gave Commercial a two-goal lead which the Cobras held until the end of the game.
