BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 5
Bulimba suffered its first defeat of the season as a hat-trick of goals from Brad Hughes helped Labrador record a 5-4 victory at the State Hockey Centre. Goals to Hughes and Corey Weyer had the Tigerstix up 2-0 after 10 minutes before three goals in three minutes – a field goal to Michael Bates and a penalty stroke and field goal to Cale Cramer – put Bulimba up 3-2. The Gold Coast side hit back to lead 4-3 at halftime but Bates scored again just after the break. The see-sawing contest looked headed for a draw before Hughes hit the match-winning goal with one minute remaining.
University of Queensland goalkeeper David Watts and Pine Rivers St Andrews forward Craig Smith both chalked up their 150th Brisbane Division 1 game, but Smith had a better day. He put a goal past fellow Toowoomba product and Queensland Blades player Watts, and was one of six goal scorers as the Saints won a third match in four outings with a 7-2 win. University’s Joel Rintala opened the scoring at Burringbar Park before Pine Rivers St Andrews regrouped to lead 2-1 at halftime through goals to Smith and Jason Hullick, then scored five more unanswered goals.
The horror run for Redcliffe Leagues has continued, conceding 10 goals for the second straight match. After losing 13-2 to Labrador last start, the peninsula side fell 11-1 at home against unbeaten league leaders and defending champions Easts at Mary Nairn Fields. The ruthless Tigers, which scored 15 goals in two games against Redcliffe Leagues last year, led 5-1 at halftime. Easts had nine goal scorers in total, with the competition’s leading scorer Robert Bell and fellow drag flick specialist Jacob Webber, playing his game full game of the year, each hitting two goals.
Valley scored its first win of the year, and its first victory in eight matches, by outclassing Norths in the clash of the competition’s winless teams at Mary Nairn Fields. Aaron O’Beirne, Blake Wotherspoon and Alwyn Krusi each scored two goals as the Diehards triumphed 6-2. Valley led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, then extended to a three-goal lead. Norths twice reduced the margin to two goals, first when Jared Campbell scored for a 3-1 scoreline in the 41st minute, then Welsh junior international Hywel Jones 4-2 converted a penalty corner with four minutes left.
Commercial moved into second spot on the ladder after doubling up on Kedron-Wavell at the State Hockey Centre. Scores were tied 1-1 after 21 minutes after Ian Schulz (Commercial) and Danny Springfield (Kedron-Wavell) scored. Commercial was up 3-1 at halftime before four goals were scored in four minutes in the third quarter. The Cobras extended to 4-1 through Jarrod Carseldine in the 48th minute, before Matt Argent struck back for the Wolves one minute later. Commercial’s Jay Pavitt and Adam McClelland then hit field goals two minutes apart, sealing a 6-3 win.
