BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - Round 4

Labrador celebrated Joe Reardon’s 200th first-grade game by reaching 10 goals in a match for the fifth time in five seasons, handing Redcliffe Leagues its heaviest defeat since 2000. Former Australian Kookaburras player Jason Wilson scored four goals as the Tigerstix won 13-2 at Keith Hunt Park. Goals to Craig Bigham and Josh McRae saw Labrador lead 2-0 at quarter-time, before the home side ran riot with five goals in the second period, to lead 7-1 at halftime. Bigham, Brad Hughes and Corey Weyer each scored twice for a Labrador side that hit 10 field goals.

Three goals in the first quarter set Easts on the path to victory over Pine Rivers St Andrews at Burringbar Park. The Tigers led 2-0 after seven minutes through strikes to Damian Mackay and Scott Boyde. Two minutes before the first break Robert Bell sent the first of two low penalty corner drag flicks past former Easts teammate Andrew Butturini, now standing in the Saints goal net. Tim Howard and Dale Gohdes scored after halftime to give Easts a 6-0 lead, before Pine Rivers St Andrews, missing some key players, scored the final two goals of the game.

Commercial averages eight goals a game this year, after putting that number of shots in the back of the Valley net. As Valley’s Chris and Josh Beale faced their former cub for the first time, scores were tied 1-1 early at Burringbar Park, after Valley’s Steve Bayliss scored to cancel out Kris Glass’s strike. Twice in the second quarter Commercial hit two goals in two minutes, in the 18th and 19th minutes and then consecutive penalty corners in the 30th and 31st minutes, to knock in five goals by halftime. Jared Taylor hit four goals as the Cobras won 8-2 in successive weeks.

Cale Cramer is nearing the milestone of 150 Division 1 goals after starring in front of goal against Norths. The Bulimba striker joined Robert Bell (Easts) and Jared Taylor (Commercial) at the top of the competition scorer’s chart with nine goals, after the Queensland Blades star scored four times against the Eagles, to take his career goal tally to 143. The Bulls won 6-1 at the State Hockey Centre, the team’s fourth win from four games this season. Bulimba’s Jaryd Cutler and Simon Borger also scored, while Jack Tucker scored for Norths with 10 minutes remaining.

For the second week in a row University of Queensland won a tight game at the Clem Jones Sports Centre by a score 2-1. For the second week in a row it was Aidan Rintala and Jake Hathway who scored the goals for the Redmen. And for the second week in a row all goals in the game were scored in the first half. This time the students edged past Kedron-Wavell, with Rintala scoring first from a penalty corner four minutes into the match. Matt Argent equalised for the Wolves just before the quarter-time break, before Hathway’s match winner in the 21st minute.
