BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE – Round 16
Labrador 3 (Chris Gilmour 2, Joe Reardon) defeated Redcliffe Leagues 1 (Matt Raynham) at Keith Hunt Park, Labrador.
Redcliffe Leagues' chances of earning a double chance in the finals courtesy of a top-three finish will likely be determined by their next match against Commercial, after the baysiders slipped to fourth on the ladder following a loss to Labrador. Labrador opened the scoring on their home turf when winger Chris Gilmour scored the first of his two goals from penalty corners, deflecting the ball into goal at the post. Redcliffe Leagues was feeling the unavailability of Queensland Blades representative Peter Dillon and consistent New Zealander James Hawley, leaving a sizeable gap in the Redmen's midfield. However, the visitors equalised midway through the first half through Matt Raynham, who found himself unmarked in the circle to finish off good lead up work by Shane Kenny and Ian Schulz. Despite creating more scoring chances than Labrador, Redcliffe Leagues couldn't make the most of their opportunities in the circle, with returning Tigerstix goalkeeper Matt Woods making some key saves. Not helping the Redmen's cause was the fact that both James McAlpine and David Halliday received yellow cards for indiscretions. Labrador regained the lead and took a 2-1 into halftime when striker Joe Reardon made the most of his limited game time, finding the back of the net after Luke Tyne started an attacking movement that saw Mark Harris beat several Redcliffe Leagues defenders. Gilmour again positioned himself at the right post to deflect a penalty corner shot past Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink, to give the Tigerstix a match-winning 3-1 lead – Lee Oliver.
Pine Rivers St Andrews 7 (Brent Garske 3, Ryan Kilpatrick 3, Ryan Gibbs) defeated Valley 1 (Callan Short) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Hat-tricks to strikers Brent Garske and Ryan Kilpatrick have headlined Pine Rivers St Andrews' 7-1 disposal of Valley. The Saints peppered the Valley goal on numerous occasions in the opening 25 minutes of the match, only to be denied by excellent goal keeping from Ben Borrensen. Instead, it was the Diehards who took an unlikely lead when Callan Short converted his side’s first penalty corner. At the opposite end the Saints finally thwarted Borrensen, with Garske burying a shot after Kilpatrick’s deflection rattled the post. Pat Gleadhill then found Ryan Gibbs in the circle, and the Mackay product’s backstick finish gave Saints a deserved half time lead. Playing in front of their largest crowd of the season, courtesy of an annual club day, the Saints turned it on in the second stanza, with Kilpatrick weaving through the circle to net a goal just a minute in. By the time he produced a pinpoint deflection from the top of the circle, and accepted a tap-in from Garske, the Saints were home. Valley had asked some questions of the Saints defence, but it was their inability to repel repeated raids from their opposition that proved the difference. Two goals in two minutes to Garske continued the rout for the Saints, before one-on-one saves against both Gibbs brothers by Borrensen prevented further misery for the Diehards. The 5-5 draw played out by the two clubs in their first-round meeting was the last time the Saints dropped a point. Their eighth win in a row ensures they retain the competition lead, and seal a top three finish for the first time in ten years – Nicholas Bolton.
Bulimba 6 (Justin Douglas 3, Liam Brown 2, Allan Dale) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
After a last-start draw against lowly United, Bulimba rediscovered some of their top form to seal their ninth straight victory over QUT. The opening 15 minutes of the game saw a fierce struggle from QUT to get the ball more than 20 metres away from their own goal, ensuring QUT goalkeeper Blair Burden was kept very busy. Multiple penalty corners were awarded to Bulimba during this time, but the Ibis defence kept deflecting their attempts, with Robert Kruger in particular putting in some impressive tackles. The Bulls finally cracked QUT's line of defence after almost 20 minutes, with Liam Brown darting through the crowd for a field goal, with assistance from team mate Justin Douglas. Allan Dale further raised the scoreboard in the 28th minute with a successfully converted penalty corner. QUT's Michael Lehmann was punished with a card from the umpire close to the break, keeping him off field for the remainder of the first half. The second half saw QUT get the ball down the other end of the field more often, giving Bulimba’s Olympic goalkeeper Stephen Lambert something to do by saving a few penalty corners. It wasn’t enough to put them on the scoreboard, with each of the penalties unsuccessful. Bulimba’s offence then kicked into a higher gear, driving the ball down the other end of the field, where it virtually stayed for the remainder of the game. Brown and Douglas proved they were a tight knit combination, working together superbly to get Brown his second field goal for the game, with Douglas rounding out the scoring with three more goals before the final whistle was blown – Tess Lawrence.
Easts 10 (George Clutton 3, Matthew Pembroke 3, Simon Mills 2, Jarrod Black 2) defeated United 1 (Adam McClelland) at the Clem Jones Centre, Carina.
Hat-tricks to George Clutton and Matthew Pembroke saw Easts cruise past United with a crushing nine-goal victory in front of their home supporters. Needing to win to keep their finals hopes alive, Easts produced a dominant display to register their fourth 10-goal haul against United in 10 meetings. It took the Tigers just 11 minutes to open the scoring through a powerful Simon Mills drag flick, with the defender hitting the back of the net again in identical fashion in the 20th minute to double Easts' lead. George Clutton extended the Tigers' advantage on the score board eight minutes later after slotting home a rebound from another powerful Mills drag flick. United pulled a goal back in the last play of the first half with an Adam McClelland drag flick ending up in the top right corner of the goal. The second half was all one way traffic starting just two minutes into the half, with Dale Ghodes striking home before Matthew Pembroke found the back of the net twice in quick succession five minutes later, from a penalty corner and open play, respectively. Clutton then earned his hat-trick over the next 10 minutes by scoring two spectacular goals from open play. Fellow forward Jarrod Black was the next Tigers player to score, before Pembroke finished his hat-trick and the routing of the out-gunned United team with 10 minutes remaining in the lop-sided contest. The emphatic victory keeps the Tigers' season alive, while United will be looking towards their next clash with bottom-placed QUT to finish their poorest season in four years on a high – Jim Moloney.
Commercial 7 (David Brain 2, Dean Rawding 2, Chris Beale, Cale Cramer, Adam Barry) defeated University of Queensland 1 (Shaun Furtado) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
University got off to the worst possible start against Commercial, and things got worse for the students as they slumped to a six-goal defeat at the hands of defending champions. Less than 30 seconds had passed when University midfielder Mitchell Smith was sent off briefly for a professional foul, and soon after Commercial's David Brain opened the scoring from a penalty corner lay-off. University played themselves into the game, with a penalty corner shot saved before goalkeeper David Watts denied Daniel Beale a goal on the Cobras counter-attack, then saved Chris Beale's low penalty corner flick. Commercial had their second goal in the 18th minute when a poor back pass from Shane Johnston gifted the ball to Cale Cramer, who set up Dean Rawding to round Watts and shoot into goal from a wide angle. Not long after University had three consecutive shots blocked during a penalty corner play, a quick pass from Adam Barry to Daniel Beale found the University defence napping, with Cramer shooting into goal uncontested. University was back in the match one minute before the halftime break, with a wayward Barry long corner hit gifting the ball to Daniel Biase-McInally, who set up Shaun Furtado to slip between Cobras tacklers Chris Beale and Joel Torrisi and shoot into goal. However, three goals at five-minute intervals midway through the second half gave Commercial an unassailable 6-1 lead. First Rawding collected a rebound from Watts' pads off a penalty corner, then Brain flicked into the roof of the net after lead up work from Daniel Beale and Tom Brough, before Barry sank a penalty corner shot – Lee Oliver.
