BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE – Round 17 (Split round – week 2)
University of Queensland 6 (Daniel Biase-McInally 3, Greg Collins 2, Shane Johnston) defeated Redcliffe Leagues 1 (Shane Kenny) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.
University’s surprise thrashing of Redcliffe Leagues opens up the possibility for a finals position, assuming they can win their final game against Pine Rivers St Andrews and Bulimba and Labrador lose their respective matches. The first goal for University was off their second penalty corner in the eighth minute, which Greg Collins sunk effortlessly. Following a first half arm wrestle, University scored two minutes into the second period as Daniel Biase-McInally deflected in a ricocheting ball following Hamish Baron's initial shot, before Collins successfully converted another penalty corner ten minutes later. Redcliffe Leagues' growing frustration was not helped by the tantalisingly close misses they were having in front of University's goal. Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink made a great save by diving to block a shot, was still unable to catch a controlled shot from McInally whose second goal put University ahead 4-0. With seven minutes left on the clock Shane Kenny smashed the ball into goal, following a brilliant run by Sean Furtado, to put Redcliffe Leagues on the scoreboard. As the will to fight left Redcliffe Leagues, Baron raced ahead to the goal with just the keeper to beat, giving a pass to McInally to dribble into the ball into goal. With seconds to go Ethan Quan drove the ball into the circle and Shane Johnston deflected into goal to complete University's stunning victory - Andrew Beard.
Commercial 5 (Cale Cramer 2, Chris Beale 2, Blair Brown) defeated Easts 1 (Jake Farell) at the Clem Jones Sports Centre, Carina.
Labrador is all that stands between Commercial and an amazing 100 per cent winning record for the 2010 regular season, after the Cobras disposed of Easts. Chasing their 25th consecutive victory and 17th win of the year, Commercial achieved the perfect start, courtesy of a drag flick goal from a penalty corner to Chris Beale inside three minutes. Unphased by the early setback Easts were quick to respond through a slap shot from Queensland Blades rookie Jake Farrell. With both sides looking to attack at every opportunity, the Cobras appeared to be getting the better of the Tigers. Indeed, in a devastating 15-minute display, Commercial piled on four goals, and it could have been more. Two brilliant strikes gave Cale Cramer a first half double, before Beale again flicked truly from a penalty corner. When Tigers midfielder Todd Watson presented Blair Brown with a gift of a goal two minutes before halftime, the match was over. Easts’ defence offered greater resistance in the second stanza, highlighted by two goal-line saves by Watson. The Tigers' best chance for goals came when Cramer was sin binned for dissent, but the stubborn Cobras defence refused to concede. Commercial goalkeeper David Reid played a pivotal role, at one stage denying a Jarrod Black deflection from point blank - Nicholas Bolton.
