BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE – Round 7
University of Queensland 4 (Jacob Burns 3, Timbi Poon) defeated QUT 0 at the Clem Jones Sports Centre, Carina.
A first half hat-trick to Jacob Burns helped University of Queensland retain the Ben Napier-Nunn Memorial Shield, while moving into the top five, with victory against intervarsity rivals QUT. QUT survived a disallowed goal from University’s first penalty corner in the second minute, before Ibis goalkeeper Tom Rendell-Woodley, replacing the injured Blair Burden, did well to save fullback Ashley Hennegan’s penalty corner flick. However, it wasn’t too long before the Redmen opened their account through inside right Burns. Two minutes after opening the scoring, Burns hit the back of the net again after Hamish Baron swooped on a Rob Kruger turnover. Burns scored again to register his hat-trick 10 minutes out from halftime, after Rendell-Woodley had saved Sim Bird’s initial shot. Despite a five star performance from Rendell-Woodley in the second half, the Ibis eventually conceded a fourth goal, a hotly disputed score to Timbi Poon 10 minutes before the fulltime whistle. The goal was University’s first from 11 penalty corner attempts in the match, and the ninth set play of the second half. Burns’ hat-trick was the first by a University player since Baron scored three against QUT in July, 2008, while the clean sheet was the first for goalkeeper Adam Dinsdale in 12 games, also against QUT – Lee Oliver.
Easts 6 (Jacob Whetton 3, Michael Bates, Jacob Webber, Dylan Wotherspoon) defeated Labrador 2 (Joe Reardon 2) at Keith Hunt Park, Labrador.
Easts have now gone six games unbeaten after downing the Labrador Tigerstix. A flurry of goals from Easts in the first seven minutes set them up with a lead they never surrendered. After four minutes Michael Bates opened the scoring before Jacob Webber and Jacob Whetton added two in two minutes. Easts continued to press the Tigerstix’s goal area, with Whetton being particularly dangerous in the final third. A penalty corner with six minutes left in the half allowed Labrador’s Joe Reardon to smash in his side’s first goal and give the home crowd something to cheer about. Labrador would have felt confident of a second half revival after Bates was sent off for dissent on half-time. Labrador couldn’t capitalise on their advantage though, and Dylan Wotherspoon made the score 4-1 minutes after Bates’ return. Labrador then had a succession of penalty corners and finally made one count when Reardon scrambled in his side’s second goal with 15 minutes left on the clock. A minute later Easts’ Andrew Campbell had his marching orders but his side scored next through Whetton after he rounded the Tigerstix goalkeeper with five minutes left. Whetton got his third goal with a minute left after his incisive run into the circle ended with a smashing drive into the top right hand corner of the net – Michael Spring.
Commercial 5 (Paul Nichols, Daniel Beale, Kye Hawgood, Blair Brown, Chris Beale) defeated United 2 (Sam Acutt, Jacob Jennison) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Keeping Commercial scoreless in the first half for the first time this year was not enough for United, as the Cobras went on a second half scoring blitz. With neither side able to gain the upper hand in the first half and a number of scoring chances going begging, the half ended with the score 0-0. Commercial came out for the second half with all guns blazing and within 10 minutes had scored three goals. The first came after United goalkeeper Aaron Duff appeared to have winded himself when he slid out to try and stop the ball, giving Paul Nichols a simple shot to put the ball into the back of the unguarded goal. Daniel Beale capitalised a minute later after some unselfish build up allowed him a simple tap in. Kye Hawgood rounded out the treble after a turnover from a 16-yard hit found him unmarked at the top of the circle and he duly put the ball in the back of the net. United looked to mount a comeback, and with goals to Sam Acutt in the 57th minute and Jacob Jennison nine minutes later it looked like the game would go down to the wire. However Commercial underlined their class with two goals in the last three minutes to Blair Brown and Chris Beale putting the result beyond doubt. The result keeps Commercial undefeated on top of the table, and marks the end of Adam McClelland’s 11-game scoring streak for United – Jim Moloney.
Pine Rivers St Andrews 5 (Ryan Gibbs, Brent Garske, Nick Bolton, Dylan Elliott, Ryan Kilpatrick) defeated Valley 1 (Callan Short) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Pine Rivers St Andrews have continued their climb up the ladder after a slow start to the season, registering a confidence-boosting victory over traditional rivals Valley. Individual pieces of brilliance by Saints strikers Dylan Elliott and Ryan Gibbs proved the difference in a tightly contested first half, that led to their side leading 2-1 at the break. For the Saints’ first goal, Elliott started outside the circle, beat a handful of defenders, and despite becoming airborne after rounding Valley goalkeeper David Watts, managed to find the net. Valley replied courtesy of a drag flick goal to fullback Callan Short, although then it was Gibbs’ turn to produce something special. Having received the ball from a long corner hit, and with no room to move, the Blades’ striker ran the backline, dragging a defender and Watts, before finishing from an acute angle. Early second-half goals to Pine Rivers St Andrews defender Nicholas Bolton and striker Brent Garske extinguished any hopes of a Valley upset. Striker Ryan Kilpatrick completed an impressive forward movement to score his side’s fifth goal. The win is the Saints’ first against Valley since 2008 – Nicholas Bolton.
Redcliffe Leagues 4 (Nick Budd, Ian Schulz, James McAlpine, David Halliday) defeated Bulimba 0 at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Redcliffe Leagues kept Bulimba scoreless for the second time in as many meetings to score a comprehensive victory that sees the peninsula men consolidate third position on the ladder. As with their recent matches against QUT and Valley, Redcliffe Leagues got out of the blocks early, scoring two goals inside the opening 10 minutes. First Nick Budd’s hard push from a penalty corner in the fifth minute beat Bulls goalkeeper Stephen Lambert to hit the corner of the goal box, before Andrew Newman skirted down the sideline before setting up Ian Schulz to score. With Bulimba missing injured midfielders Dean Butler and Kyle Richardson, fullback Blake Wallis was in the thick of the action for the Bulls, defending well and instigating attacking chances, while Lambert pulled off several good saves. But their efforts ultimately amounted to little, with James McAlpine scoring Redcliffe Leagues’ third goal seven minutes before halftime after good lead-up work by Shaun Furtado and Peter Dillon. Bulls striker Steven Bullion then had Bulimba’s first real scoring chance negated by the Redmen’s goalkeeper Daniel Pink. Only one goal was scored in the second half of an often tense match that saw three yellow cards issued to Redcliffe Leagues players. Forward David Halliday scored late in the contest after earlier missing a penalty stroke – Lee Oliver.
