BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 11
Commercial 9 (Kye Hawgood 3, Daniel Beale 2, Adam Barry, Cale Cramer, Chris Beale, Ian Baker) defeated Easts 4 (Jason Wilson 3, Peter Morris) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Commercial have re-established why they are still joint-leaders of the competition after beating Easts, who were almost at full strength for the first time this season. A tough call by the umpire gave Commercial a penalty corner five minutes in which Cobras fullback Adam Barry sealed with his trademark hit. Easts took 20 minutes to reply but did so in style with a perfectly placed drag flick by Jason Wilson, although Commercial bounced back shortly after, scoring two goals in two minutes. A great goal by Easts’ Peter Morris six minutes out from halftime kept the game alive, but again the Tigers let down their guard and gave Commercial’s Ian Baker time to find the backboard a minute later. Two minutes after the break the Tigers made it a contest with Wilson securing his second goal to take the scoreline to 4-3. However, the Cobras were not ready to lose two games in a row and put four goals past Easts goalkeeper Casey Lee in only 13 minutes. With 16 minutes left Easts produced some good teamwork to give Wilson his hat-trick of goals for the match. Daniel Beale found the open net to secure his double with ten minutes to play, giving the Cobras their second five-goal win against the Tigers this season.

Redcliffe Leagues 5 (Andrew Newman, Shane Kenny, Matthew Swann, Ian Schulz, David Halliday) defeated University of Queensland 1 (Timbi Poon) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
A blistering spell from Redcliffe Leagues has helped the joint competition leaders see off a stubborn University outfit. The Peninsula men were camped in attack for much of the first half, but desperate defence from the students, led by goalkeeper Aaron Duff, repeatedly repelled Redcliffe Leagues. Against the run of play a Timbi Poon deflection then gave University the lead. Poon looked to have a second goal minutes later, only for his tomahawk shot to be denied by a classy save by Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink. University started strongly after the halftime interval, and there was no indication of what would unfold. A goal to Redcliffe Leagues striker Andrew Newman 12 minutes after the break was the beginning of the end for the students, with Shane Kenny, Matthew Swann and Ian Schulz also scoring to make it four goals in five minutes. David Halliday scored to complete Redcliffe Leagues’ victory, but undoubtedly the highlight of the match was Swann’s entry for goal of the year. The Australian under-21 star, recently awarded an Australian Institute of Sport contract, left Duff with no chance when he put a brilliant tomahawk shot in to the top corner of the net.

Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 3 (Brent Garske 2, Craig Smith) defeated Bulimba 2 (Duncan Mahony, Ben Flemming) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths rebounded from a last-start defeat to end Bulimba’s four-game winning streak in a quality encounter. Faced with the prospect of slipping to sixth position had they lost, the win sees the Saints leapfrog the Bulls into third position on a congested competition ladder. The importance of the clash was apparent early, with both teams determined not to concede the first goal. However, two goals in three minutes late in the half to Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths blew the game wide open. Brent Garske opened the scoring, accepting a pass from striker Joel Farrell, before Craig Smith converted a penalty corner. Saints threatened to extend their lead after the break, but instead a deflection goal to Bulls forward Ben Flemming halved the deficit. Garske’s second goal then restored the margin, and Bulimba had the post to thank for preventing his hat-trick. Although a Duncan Mahony strike set up a nail biting finish, the Saints survived a tense six minutes having earlier failed to take their scoring chances. The Saints have now won their past three games against Bulimba after only managing to score one goal in their previous seven matches against the Bulls.

United 10 (Adam McClelland 6, Jacob Jennison, Kula Bhullar, Belema Dede, David Carlson) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Adam McClelland has extended his lead as the highest goal scorer for the competition after equalling the record for the most goals by one player in a single match this season. The game started badly for QUT who scored an own goal to give United the lead just three minutes in. Ten minutes later Belema Debe capitalised on some poor defensive play by the Ibis to take his team out to a 2-0 lead. Kula Bhullar found the backboard in the 24th minute from one of United’s many penalty corners, before McClelland made it 6-0 ahead of half-time with a perfectly executed penalty stroke and two textbook drag flicks. The students worked hard after the break to keep United scoreless for 20 minutes until a great pass from Miebaka Debe allowed McClelland to find space and drag Ibis goalkeeper Anders Kinsella to get his forth goal for the match. Just two minutes later David Carlson slotted a free shot from the top of the circle which Kinsella clearly misread. McClelland then added two more goals before fulltime to take his season goal tally to 19 goals and wrap up the biggest win in United’s three-year history. McClelland joins Redcliffe Leagues’ David Halliday as the other player to score six goals in a match this year.

Labrador 7 (Mark Harris 3, Grant Smith 2, Andrew Ward, Kyle Gildea) defeated Valley 2 (Duncan Stewart, Dean Jeffrey) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Labrador maintained their undefeated record against Valley thanks to their second dominant victory over the Diehards this season. Following on from a comfortable 7-0 win by the Tigerstix over Valley in Round 2, a repeat scoreline looked on the cards for the Gold Coast side as they amassed five unanswered goals by the one-hour mark. Former Queensland Blades star Mark Harris and ex-Australian player Grant Smith both scored within the first quarter hour for Labrador, with further scores to Harris and Andrew Ward giving the Tigerstix a 4-0 halftime lead. Harris scored seven minutes after halftime to secure his hat-trick of goals. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes of the match that Valley, who entered the contest looking to score their third straight win, got on the scoreboard. Goals to Duncan Stewart after 60 minutes and a score to Dean Jeffrey in the dying moments of the match was broken up by a goal from the penalty spot by Smith. Kyle Gildea scored his first goal in the Brisbane competition for Labrador, whose comprehensive victory, their fifth win from a total of six meetings against Valley, sees them pass Easts to move back into the top five.
