BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 4
Valley 3 (Pat Gleadhill, Brendan Lindsay, Duncan Stewart) drew with Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 3 (Justin Truscott, Ryan Kilpatrick, Cameron Richards) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Valley has lived up to its nickname, with a never-say-die attitude helping the Diehards to snatch a vital draw with Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths. A last-minute goal to Duncan Stewart denied the Saints a likely victory, leaving the joint venture side with just one win from four rounds. Valley had the better of the opening exchanges, but it wasn’t long before the Saints began to dominate field position. However, it was Valley who scored first against the run of play when Pat Gleadhill netted a desperate cross, before a Justin Truscott backstick shot quickly levelled the scores. A Cameron Richards deflection then ensured the Saints would lead at halftime, converting a penalty corner after the siren. Upon returning from the break the Saints continued to pressure the Diehards’ defence, extending their lead through a perfectly executed short corner to Ryan Kilpatrick. When Valley’s Brendan Lindsay scored to reduce the deficit to one goal, the Saints would have felt they should have been further in front. Goalkeeper David Watts kept Valley in the contest, saving what appeared to be a match-winning tomahawk from Luke Reddiex, before Stewart’s freakish deflection snatched a draw for his side.

Redcliffe Leagues 3 (Shane Kenny, Andrew Newman, David Halliday) defeated Labrador 2 (Grant Smith, Nicholas Heyns) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.
A goal from David Halliday with four minutes left to play helped Redcliffe Leagues get out of jail against Labrador to remain unbeaten on top of the ladder. The Tigerstix opened the scoring when Grant Smith capitalised on a cheap turnover in deep defence by Redcliffe Leagues fullback Matthew Curran. When Kyle Murphy set up Shane Kenny to score his ninth goal of the season midway through the first half Redcliffe Leagues were level, but their good work was undone just one minute later. A powerful shot from South African import Nicholas Heyns, finishing off a slick breakaway attack, saw Labrador lead at halftime. The Gold Coast men made numerous advances into the attacking circle immediately after the break but poor shooting, and Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink, kept the baysiders in the contest. With their stingy defence holding firm the home side wrestled back the ascendancy with Andrew Newman tying the game with 20 minutes left, before Halliday netted an opportunistic match-winning goal. Curran sent a hopeful long pass towards goal from halfway, with the ball taking a wicked deflection that evaded defenders and fell into the path of a diving Halliday at the back post.

Bulimba 5 (Luke Paine 3, Duncan Mahony, Ben Flemming) defeated United 3 (Adam McClelland 2, Todd Curran) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
The unexpected return of midfield maestro Dean Butler helped Bulimba to its second successive victory, this time against United. The Athens Olympics gold medallist, who had hinted at retiring from the sport following the recent Australian Hockey League season, made a triumphant return as the Bulls led for the whole match. United found Bulimba’s penalty corner specialist Luke Paine too hot to handle, with the fullback scoring three goals. Bulimba led 2-0 within 10 minutes thanks to goals from Paine and Duncan Mahony, before Todd Curran scored for United soon after. Paine’s second goal helped the Bulls to a 3-2 halftime lead, off-setting the first of two goals from United striker Adam McClelland. Paine completed his hat-trick to restore his side’s two-goal buffer with 13 minutes remaining, before Ben Flemming’s goal with five minutes left finally extinguished United’s resistance. Bulimba’s 5-3 victory was the same scoreline by which they beat United in their last meeting, with the Bulls also scoring a 5-2 win over the joint venture side earlier last season. The win sees the Bulls shoot up to third on a congested ladder, just two weeks after they sat in a lowly eighth spot.

Commercial 3 (Kye Hawgood 2, Cale Cramer) defeated University of Queensland 1 (Damien Queisser) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.
Commercial saw off the threat of giant killers University to remain undefeated and retain second place on the ladder with a grinding win. The students entered its clash with the defending premiers full of confidence after upsetting fellow 2008 grand finalists Easts the previous weekend. But it was Commercial who opened the scoring late in the first half through a goal to Cale Cramer, with the Cobras doubling their lead through Kye Hawgood 12 minutes after halftime. A lack of concentration midway through the second half virtually ruined University’s chance to score their second successive upset victory. After Damien Queisser scored for the students to halve Commercial’s lead, Hawgood found the back of the net moments after the ensuing restart to put the Cobras back in the driver’s seat. While Adam Dinsdale was brilliant in goal for University, his side couldn’t convert numerous half chances to fight their way back into the match. Despite their win, Commercial will need to make more of its scoring opportunities from set pieces. The Cobras were unable to score from any of their 15 penalty corner attempts against University, who had no corners of their own.

Easts 11 (Jarrod Black 4, Dale Gohdes 4, Ben McCarthy, Darrian Brennan, Zaan Togo) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Easts emphatically ended a rare losing streak that threatened to derail their season by thrashing QUT. Jarrod Black and Dale Gohdes went on a scoring rampage for the Tigers, contributing all but three of their side’s 11 goals in the clash of the competition’s only winless sides. After playing reserve grade the previous week against University, Black celebrated his recall to the top grade with four goals, while Gohdes also chimed in with four strikes. The duo both scored within the opening 15 minutes of the match, with the Tigers scoring a further three times before halftime to seal the result. Darrian Brennan, Zaan Togo and Queensland representative Ben McCarthy also scored for Easts, who were staring down the barrel of their most losses in a regular season in seven years, after opening their 2009 campaign with three straight defeats. QUT will be seeking a change of fortune when they tackle University of Queensland for the inaugural Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield on May 2. The shield honours the memory of the former QUT player who died of a cardiomyopathy heart attack during a Division 3 game against University, aged 20. The match will be played exactly 10 years to the day since his tragic passing.
