BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 5
University of Queensland 3 (David James, Greg Collins, Timbi Poon) defeated QUT 1 (Chris Gilmore) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
University of Queensland made history when they defeated QUT to claim the inaugural Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield. Black arm bands were worn by QUT to show respect for their former clubmate, who tragically died during a Division 3 game against University a decade ago. But it was the students in maroon who set the pace early on with David James adding the final touches to a penalty corner in the third minute. Twelve minutes later Timbi Poon extended the Redmen’s lead, taking advantage of some scrappy QUT defence. However it was the Ibis who gained momentum heading into halftime when their increased numbers in the attacking circle allowed Chris Gilmore to bring the scoreline back to 2-1. Not long after the break QUT goalkeeper Anders Kinsella kept his team in the game by making an outstanding save to deny a Greg Collins penalty stroke. Four minutes later Collins got his revenge, finding space in the circle and sending a rocketing tomahawk past Kinsella. QUT fought back late in the match but University held on to win another tight inter-varsity clash.

Easts 9 (Jason Wilson 4, Treva Mills 2, Jarrod Black, Andrew Campbell, Dale Gohdes) defeated Labrador 6 (Craig Bigham 3, Joel Ward, Joe Reardon, Mark Harris) at Keith Hunt Park, Labrador.
The debut of Australian representative Brent Livermore for Labrador was overshadowed by an awesome display of attacking from the visiting Easts Tigers in front of a healthy Gold Coast crowd. Jason Wilson celebrated his call-up to the Kookaburras side to tour Europe by scoring four goals for the Tigers, who went on a relentless scoring spree in the first half. Labrador was left to rue missing three early scoring chances as Easts found the back of the net six times in the first half. Easts stretched out to an 8-0 lead early in the second half before the home side finally got on the scoreboard after Joel Ward converted a penalty stroke. The Tigerstix then went on a scoring run of their own, netting the next four goals to bring the margin back to 8-5. Craig Bigham scored a hat-trick of goals for Labrador, who are just the second team in the past six seasons to lose after scoring five goals or more in a match. The last side to achieve the dubious feat was QUT, who scored six times in a two-goal loss to University of Queensland two years ago.

Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 6 (Ryan Gibbs 2, Craig Richards 2, Ryan Kilpatrick, Craig Smith) defeated United 2 (Adam McClelland 2) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths reignited their 2009 campaign by stunning United. Following a frustrating last-start draw against Valley, Saints’ attack clicked into gear spearheaded by Craig Smith and Ryan Gibbs. Saints flew out of the blocks, with Gibbs bagging a double in the opening three minutes, to leave United rattled. The onslaught continued as the Brendale-based club raced to a 4-0 lead inside 20 minutes, through further goals to Ryan Kilpatrick and Craig Smith. An Adam McClelland goal gave United some hope of a comeback heading into halftime, however any thoughts of a revival were short-lived, as Saint Craig Richards scored immediately after the break to put the result beyond doubt. Saints appeared capable of bettering their four-goal first half effort, with Gibbs going agonisingly close to a hat-trick on two occasions, yet neither side could find the net until McClelland and Richards both managed a second. The win will help erase memories of the corresponding fixture last year, in which United shocked Saints 5-0, the defeat that ultimately cost them a finals berth.

Redcliffe Leagues 5 (Shane Kenny 2, Andrew Newman 2, Ian Schulz) defeated Bulimba 2 (Dean Butler, Jaryd Cutler) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
A rough Bulimba defence and a disallowed goal were not enough to keep the three points away from Redcliffe Leagues, who extended their lead at the top of the ladder. The Redmen found the net first when Andrew Newman slotted a backstick shot in the seventh minute, before Bulimba replied with a freakish touch by Jaryd Cutler which shocked Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink as it bounced past him. Newman secured his double in the 22nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the circle during a penalty corner, before a perfectly executed deflection by Ian Schulz saw the boys from the peninsula lead 3-1 at half-time. Bulimba capitalised first in the second half when a Dean Butler flick from a penalty corner got the Bulls back in the game. At 3-2 the match was heating up however Redcliffe Leagues striker Shane Kenny broke the ice midway through the second half after a skilful steal outside the attacking circle. Great teamwork by the Redmen with seven minutes to play allowed Kenny to find space to slot home his second goal of the match, and his 11th of the season, to secure a 5-2 win.

Commercial 7 (Cale Cramer 3, Chris Beale 2, Tom Brough, Ian Baker) defeated Valley 0 at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
Commercial maintained their recent scoring average of netting seven goals a game against Valley in a one-sided contest between the north side rivals. The unavailability of arguably Valley’s two best players - Queensland Blades goalkeeper David Watts and former Blades representative Tobias Figura - proved too much for the Diehards to overcome, with the Cobras asserting their dominance early. Tom Brough scored after 10 minutes before Chris Beale doubled the lead eight minutes later. Current Blades player Cale Cramer scored the first of his three goals to make it 3-0, before Ian Baker scored in the shadows of halftime to give the Cobras a match-winning four goal lead. Cramer completed his second hat-trick of goals in three weeks with 25 minutes left, with Beale later securing his double to complete another familiar sizeable victory against for the Cobras against the Diehards. The match was the fifth time in their past six meetings that three-time defending champions has scored six goals or more against Valley.
