BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 10

Bulimba 5 (Duncan Mahony 3, Todd Gill 2) defeated University of Queensland 3 (Hamish Baron 2, Anthony Kirk) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

Bulimba again demonstrated its comeback qualities against University, running down the students to repeat their 5-3 win from Round 1.  A week after coming from a goal down on three occasions to draw with Redcliffe Leagues, the Bulls again played catch-up for much of their clash against University.  After opening the scoring through Duncan Mahony, Bulimba trailed heading into halftime after University’s New Zealand international Hamish baron scored two classy goals.  Bulimba goalkeeper Cameron Wickbold then pulled off a stunning reflex save to deny David James a goal from close range.  Wickbold’s save proved to be one of the turning points of the match, with Todd Gill scoring for Bulimba on the stroke of halftime to tie the game.  Anthony Kirk restored University’s lead to hint at an upset victory with 20 minutes left, but the students’ valiant revival was undone within three minutes.  Gill and Mahoney scored in quick time as Bulimba took a 4-3 lead with 15 minutes remaining.  With Bulimba defenders Blake Wallis and Mitch Baker holding danger man Baron at bay, Mahony scored his third goal with five minutes left to seal victory for the Bulls.

Redcliffe Leagues 6 (Ian Schulz 2, Matthew Swann, Shane Kenny, David Halliday, Marcus McKinnon) defeated Valley 2 (Tobias Figura, Arky Wood) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.

Redcliffe Leagues players proved they had learned from past hard lessons as the peninsula side downed Valley.  The home side’s comfortable four-goal victory went some way to erasing the bitter memories of a shock defeat to Valley in the opening round of the season.  On that occasion Redcliffe Leagues leaked two late goals in as many minutes to Tobias Figura to lose 3-2, while the baysiders had surrendered a one-goal lead on three occasions to draw against Bulimba in its previous match.  But Redcliffe Leagues didn’t relent against Valley in their return meeting, building on a solid start to the match to secure victory by out-scoring their opponents by three goals to one in each half of the game.  Ian Schulz scored two goals for Redcliffe Leagues, while Marcus McKinnon also found the back of the net against his former club.  For Valley, Figura continued his great scoring form to notch his 12th goal of the season, while 18-year-old Arky Wood, a Sri Lankan expatriate who manager Paul Saunders said had only played on dirt before moving to Australia, scored his first top-grade goal.

Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 7 (Brent Garske 3, Ryan Kilpatrick 2, Ryan Gibbs, Michael Stokes) defeated QUT 1 (Dean Tyler) at Buringbar Park, Chermside.

Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths may have found a cure for its lack of potency in front of goal with the mid-season signing of Queensland Under-21 star Brent Garske.  The Toowoomba product scored three goals on debut as the Saints coasted to their biggest victory in recent memory, a 7-1 triumph against QUT.  Saints are hoping the former Australian Schoolboys representative will bring attacking prowess to a side that had only scored three goals from its previous five matches.  Garske’s strike partner Ryan Kilpatrick scored two classy goals to give Saints an early lead against QUT, which was transformed to a 5-0 break at halftime.  The lop-sided match wasn’t without drama, with Saints goalkeeper Nathan Panetta knocked out after being kneed in the head by a QUT playing sliding for a shot.  The match was abandoned several minutes before fulltime as a result of the incident.  Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths’ win follows a 5-0 victory against the Ibis in the opening fixture of the season.

Easts 10 (Matt Gohdes 3, Jacob Webber 3, Jacob Whetton 2, Jason Wilson, Jarrod Black) defeated United 2 (Allan Dickson, Belema Dede) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

Three of Easts’ boom teenagers had a night out as the Tigers smothered United in another lopsided clash between the two sides.  Yet again United found out the hard way why Easts are the favourites to take out this year’s competition, while the Tigers also confirmed their reputation as the competition’s slickest attacking outfit.  Queensland junior representatives Jacob Webber, Matt Gohdes and Jacob Whetton scored eight of the Tigers’ 10 goals between them as their side scored its tenth straight win.  Easts, which had registered 10 goals against United in two of their last three meetings, only led 2-0 after 20 minutes, but the Tigers cut loose late in the first half to score four goals to take a match-winning 6-0 lead into the break.  United’s Allan Dickson scored the opening goal of the second half.  However, Easts scored three goals in four minutes - two to Whetton and one to Jarrod Black - soon after to re-establish their dominance.  Jason Wilson also scored for Easts, to see him head the BHL scorers list with 14 goals so far this season.

Labrador 4 (Brad Puleosi, Mark Harris, Tom Kavanagh, Matt Riley) drew with Commercial 4 (Cale Kramer, David Brain, Kye Hawgood, Adam Barry) at Keith Hunt Park, Labrador.

A late penalty stroke goal to fullback Adam Barry saved Commercial from a wasted road trip to the Gold Coast.  Commercial looked like they were going to take the game, as they took the early lead only four minutes into the game and dominated the first half.  Labrador was having a little trouble finding the back of the net, partly due to excellent defensive plays by Commercial and excellent goaltending from David Reid.  Labrador’s Mark Harris put the ball in the net with 10 minutes left in the first half, but Commercial was quick to respond and held a two-goal lead after Kye Hawgood and David Brain scored.  The second half remained scoreless until Labrador fought back to took the lead 4-3 with unanswered goals to Brad Puleosi, Tom Kavanagh and Matt Riley.  As the final buzzer went, it looked like Labrador had won the game, but Commercial was granted a penalty stroke following a penalty corner.  Barry beat ex-Commercial goalkeeper Tyrone Melrose from the penalty spot after the fulltime buzzer to snatch a draw.
