BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 9

Bulimba 3 (Todd Gill, Matt Legge, Jarrod Cutler) drew with Redcliffe Leagues 3 (James McAlpine, Trent Kreis, Shane Kenny) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.

Bulimba recovered from a one-goal deficit on three occasions to salvage a 3-all draw with Redcliffe Leagues in a tightly contested and entertaining match. Redcliffe Leagues’s James McAlpine lifted the ball into the net following a short corner in the third minute, before Bulimba’s Todd Gill equalised just four minutes later.  With intermittent showers falling, each side scored again in the first half, and the score was 2-2 at the break. Trent Kreis scored for the peninsula side after good lead-up work from Peter Dillon, before Matt Legge made a crucial strike as Redcliffe Leagues’s defence faltered just 40 seconds before the break.  Redcliffe Leagues took a 3-2 lead in the second half when Shane Kenny scored after good lead-up work from Ian Schulz.  But Redcliffe Leagues’s chances of beating the Bulls for the first time since 2004 took a blow with four minutes remaining when Marty Somers was controversially sent off after an alleged incident in backplay. Bulimba’s Jarrod Cutler found the back of the net just one minute later, and the points were shared.

Labrador 11 (Mark Harris 4, Brad Puleosi 3, Sam Barker, Joe Reardon, Adam Byrnes, Joel Ward) defeated QUT 3 (Rohan Butterworth 2, Justin Truscott) at Burringbar Park, Chermside.

A nine-goal second half scoring spree helped Labrador register the highest goal tally of its brief existence in the Brisbane competition - and its biggest victory - in a lop-sided affair against QUT.  Mark Harris and Brad Puleosi scored seven goals between them for Labrador, who led 2-1 at halftime.  After QUT got back into the game through Rohan Butterworth’s well worked goal into the 27th minute, the Ibis’s defence deteriorated soon after halftime.  The Tigerstix scored effectively sealed the match with three goals - to Sam Barker, Joe Reardon and Harris - scored within 10 minutes of the resumption of play after the break.  Butterworth scored his second goal with 17 minutes remaining in the match to bring QUT back to 6-2 down, but the revival was short lived.  Within five minutes Harris and Adam Byrnes had added two more goals for Labrador, who have now beaten QUT by an aggregate score of 25-6 in their three meetings.

Easts 4 (Jason Wilson 2, George Clutton, Peter Morris) defeated Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths put up a good fight, but were ultimately outclassed, as Easts extended its unbeaten run by yet another game.  Saints, who had conceded 10 goals or more to the Tigers in three of their past four meetings, looked like they could be on the receiving end of another blowout score when Easts’ Jason Wilson scored from a penalty corner after just four minutes.  But with Saints inside left Craig Smith matching Wilson, and winger Craig Richards setting up scoring chances, the underdogs looked the equal of the Tigers for most of the first half.  That was until George Clutton scored after 26 minutes when the Saints defence gave the Queensland representative too much room on the top of the circle.  Diminutive Saints goalkeeper Nathan Panetta pulled off a series of great saves to keep his side in the match, until Peter Morris scored from a penalty corner with half an hour left to play. Wilson added anther penalty corner goal with 10 minutes left to seal the result and the Tigers’ ninth win from as many matches.

Commercial 5 (Kye Hawgood 2, Cale Kramer 2, Matt Lagerroth) defeated University of Queensland 0 at Burringbar Park, Chermside.

Two days after its scheduled match against Valley was again cancelled due to heavy rain, Commercial returned to Burringbar Park to find a dry track and a willing University side that made the reigning premiers work hard for victory.  The students, still smarting from a heavy 9-3 loss to Easts in their catch-up match on Thursday night, held the Cobras scoreless for 20 minutes, until Cale Cramer scored.  It appeared the teams would go to the sheds at halftime with a 1-0 scoreline, until Kye Hawgood scored Commercial’s decisive second goal two minutes before the break.  In a match that featured only two penalty corners, the Cobras upped the ante and displayed fluent attack after the break.  Cramer and Hawgood had blown the game open with 30 minutes left to play, when both found the net within five minutes of the start of the second half.  Matt Lagerroth scored a goal of his own in the last minute of the game when he finished off an attack he started.
