BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - ROUND 4

United 4 (Matthew Freeman 2, Adam McClelland, Luke McGowan) defeated QUT 2 (Justin Truscott, Andre Pohl) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.

United overcame the absence of Troy Elder to record a 4-2 win over a gallant QUT.  United opened the scoring after six minutes when the ball bounced favourably for Matt Freeman, who struck it past advancing QUT goalkeeper Chris Grew.  United failed to capitalise on a series of short corners, but went on to lead 2-0 at the break.  QUT hit back soon after half-time when Andre Pohl scored from a deflection, but then United jumped to a 3-1 lead.  One goal separated the sides with 20 minutes remaining after QUT captain Justin Truscott scored from a short corner.  QUT appeared to equalise as the game’s biggest controversy took place with nine minutes left.  QUT was awarded a goal after a shot deflected off an opponent’s stick and went past the goalkeeper.  The QUT players started celebrating, but the two umpires consulted, and the goal was disallowed as the shot was taken just outside the circle.  United finally sealed the game with two minutes left, when Adam McClelland capitalised on a cross from Jacob Jennison.

Easts 5 (Jason Wilson 2, Tim Bates, Darran Bisley, Jarrod Black) defeated Commercial 2 (Jacob Burns, Ian Baker) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

Easts’ Stephen Green confirmed his reputation as one of Queensland’s best goalkeepers as his side got revenge for last year’s grand final loss to Commercial to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition.  Green pulled off a series of spectacular and timely saves throughout the match, before his side came home strong against the Cobras.  The Tigers led 2-1 coming into halftime, after Easts’ Jason Wilson and Tim Bates and Commercial’s Jacob Burns had scored for their respective sides.  But with only two minutes left in the first half, Burns capitalised on a turnover, slicing through three Easts defenders to set up Ian Baker to score and tie the game.  Five minutes after halftime Wilson had his second goal, skilfully rocketing a backstick shot into the net after Bates’ powerful penalty corner flick had struck the crossbar.  Darran Bisley and Jarrod Black also scored as Easts dominated their opponents in the final 20 minutes.

Labrador 8 (Dan Edge 2, Joe Reardon 2, Brad Puleosi 2, Jake Baldry, Matt Reilly) defeated Valley 3 (Tobias Figura 3) at Keith Hunt Park, Labrador.

Labrador once again gave home supporters another good reason to come out and watch their team in the rain, as the impressive Tigerstix side outscored Valley by five goals.  Despite an impressive three-goal haul by Tobias Figura, Valley struggled against the team that pipped them for a finals berth last season.  The scoring started within the first four minutes of the match when Labrador’s Daniel Edge scored the first of his brace of goals off a penalty corner.  Labrador team-mate Brad Puleosi continued his recent scoring streak by netting a couple of goals, while Joe Reardon made an amazing diving stretch to score just before the first half ended, to add to Labrador’s lead.  Valley had a few tricks up their sleeves as well, with two of Figura’s goals coming from shots that were very well placed into the net.  However, with his side missing key players Duncan Stewart and Joran Bennett through injury, Valley were outclassed and soundly beaten by Labrador.

University of Queensland 3 (Greg Collins, Anthony Kirk, Hamish Baron) defeated Redcliffe Leagues 2 (James McAlpine, Ian Schultz) at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe.

University of Queensland won its second successive match on a rainy day in Redcliffe, erasing bitter memories of a 10-0 thrashing by Redcliffe Leagues during the student’s last visit to the peninsula.  The home side was set back after just one minute when University’s Greg Collins scored off a deflection.  Redcliffe Leagues had a goal disallowed for a dangerous lifted ball in the 11th minute, but the scores were levelled eight minutes later when James McAlpine drove the ball past University goalkeeper Adam Dinsdale after a short corner.  University centre half Anthony Kirk was largely responsible for his team taking a 2-1 lead into half-time.  Firstly, he scored from a short corner, and then he defused a Redcliffe Leagues raid from a short corner.  The home team levelled the scores soon after the break when Ian Schultz scored, before University broke the deadlock following a controversial yellow card ruling against Redcliffe Leagues’ Marcus McKinnon.  Hamish Baron rounded Redcliffe Leagues goalkeeper Daniel Pink to score the game’s decisive goal just one minute later.

Bulimba 3 (Duncan Mahoney, Dean Butler, Ben Flemming) defeated Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths 2 (Luke Reddiex, Ryan Kilpatrick) at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

An ill disciplined Bulimba side held off a late charge by Pine Rivers St Andrews-Norths at a wet State Hockey Centre to maintain their place in the top five.  The Saints got off to the perfect start when Luke Reddiex scored his fourth goal from as many games, deflecting the ball into goal after five minutes.  Bulimba drew level when Duncan Mahoney received a Dean Butler pass to score from close range, before returning the favour three minutes later by throwing the last pass for Butler’s goal.  Ben Flemming’s goal gave Bulimba a comfortable lead with 20 minutes left, before poor discipline let the Saints back in the game.  The Bulls played with nine players for eight minutes after Matt Legge and Liam Brown were given yellow cards for professional fouls.  The Saints made the most of their numerical advantage, with Ryan Kilpatrick scoring after a mad scramble in front of goal.  Dave Donnelly finished the match on the sideline after receiving Bulimba’s third yellow card, but his team survived a late penalty corner to win.
