BRISBANE HOCKEY LEAGUE - FINALS (week 1)
Commercial 5 (David Brain, Tom Brough, Jason Green, Cale Cramer, Chris Beale) defeated Labrador 0 at the State Hockey Centre.
Defending champions Commercial sounded an ominous warning to rival clubs that they won’t relinquish their premiership crown meekly after easily accounting for a lacklustre Labrador side. The Cobras moved within one victory of a fifth consecutive grand final appearance after building on a 3-0 halftime lead. Commercial exposed Labrador’s defensive frailties constantly throughout the match, and took the lead after six minutes through a goal to David Brain. Tom Brough squeezed a shot past former Cobras goalkeeper Tyrone Melrose to give the Cobras a two-goal lead, before Jason Green knocked in a pass from Cale Cramer two minutes before halftime. With Labrador’s usually potent penalty corner battery failing, Cramer scored a goal of his own six minutes after halftime to give Commercial an unassailable four-goal lead. Chris Beale complete Commercial’s impressive victory when he netted his side’s fifth goal 10 minutes from fulltime. After guiding his side to second on the ladder in his first year as coach, Commercial’s Blair Brown capped the victory by being named Coach of the Year at the Brisbane Hockey Association Awards on Saturday night.
Redcliffe Leagues 2 (Nick Budd, Matthew Swann) defeated Bulimba 1 (Jaryd Cutler) at the State Hockey Centre.
Redcliffe Leagues overcome one of its perennial bogey sides to continue their run towards the grand final, as well as ending Bulimba’s season, after emerging victorious from an entertaining knockout final clash. Redcliffe Leagues beat Bulimba for the first time in 13 matches, with goalkeeper Daniel Pink and winger Kent Harle standouts for the baysiders. With the sides meeting in a sudden death semi final for the fourth time in the past five seasons, Redcliffe Leagues repelled early attacking advances from the Bulimba. Bulls forwards Liam Brown and Ben Flemming threatened the peninsula side’s defence early on, but it was Redcliffe Leagues who scored first through Nick Budd. After Flemming shot just wide and Bulls fullback Mitch Baker’s shot hit the post, Redcliffe Leagues doubled its lead five minutes after halftime. Matthew Swann chipped the ball over Bulimba goalkeeper Cameron Wickbold with a neat backstick shot. But Bulimba fought its way back into the match, with Jaryd Cutler deflecting Dean Butler’s pass beyond Pink with 15 minutes left. After Shane Kenny missed a golden chance to seal the game for Redcliffe Leagues, the peninsula men survived a penalty corner after the final siren to beat Bulimba for the first time since 2004.
